Food Forest - postponed

June 12, 2019

Sunnyhill Members

With regrets we are writing to inform you that the Food Forest at Sunnyhill that was slated for June 15th has been postponed pending presentation of the plan to Membership. However, Grounds Committee Members will be out and about on the afternoon of Saturday June 15th and/or Sunday June 16th  pruning, weeding and mulching and would be very happy to have you help with this needed work on our property.  We look forward to discussing both the particulars and full scope of this project at a forthcoming general meeting

Water barrels - bulk purchase offer

Submitted by Debbie Willis

The Calgary EcoStore can offer a bulk discount on water barrels, which are normally priced at $85 but will be 10% off if we purchase ten or more as a group. Water barrels are a wonderful way to increase water security and sustainability in the co-op and to source chlorine-free water for your garden. Bonus: the Eco Store's water barrels are made of re-used materials.

Please text or call Debbie at 403-875-5818 or email debmwillis@gmail.com if interested.

News From Grounds

Submitted by Pamela Boyd

Mark Your calendars!!!

On Saturday, June 15th, Sunnyhill will be planting a Food Forest Pilot Project in the south amphitheatre (between walkway and back yards of 744-748). We have been successful in receiving a grant of $3,500 for this project from Tree Canada, a national organization, and its local partner, Pembina Pipeline. The work will be done in collaboration with Sunshine Earth Works, a Calgary permaculture organization “committed to repairing the earth one yard at a time.”

What is a food forest? “Forest gardening is a low-maintenance, sustainable, plant-based food production and agroforestry system based on woodland ecosystems, incorporating fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, vines, and perennial vegetables that have yields directly useful to humans.”

Under the guidance of Jeremy Zoller and his crew from Sunshine Earth Works, the Grounds Committee, co-op members, and volunteers from Pembina will be removing sod, preparing the soil, and planting trees and shrubs. This should all be done between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 15.

Although the south amphitheatre is a fairly small space, it will accommodate four new fruit trees, along with a number of taller and smaller edible shrubs, herbs, and other perennials in the mid-level and understory beneath the trees. Mulch walkways will replace the grass, and there will be informational signage.

Lunch will be provided for all workers and likely even a case or two of beer at the end of the day to celebrate completion. Plan to join us in participating with our community in some healthy physical labour to bring this fabulous spring project to fruition (pun intended).

** Sign up for a shift with Andrea in the office.

Recycling Tip #3

Submitted by Belle Auld

Recycling tip

Kleenex Boxes (facial tissue)

  • remove the plastic window from the box

  • bundle the plastic with other plastic bags and collect in a plastic bag until it is full, then tie bag closed and put it in blue recycling cart

  • fold cardboard Kleenex box and put it in blue recycling cart

Kleenex

Most clean or used Kleenex (and toilet paper) can go in our green composting cart, except Kleenex with:

  • blood

  • makeup

  • cleaning products or

  • other chemicals

These do NOT go in our green cart. They go in the black garbage cart.

The City also recommends that we do not put facial tissue (instead of toilet paper) down our toilets – they say Kleenex is harmful to our pipes and the environment.

Google “What goes where Calgary” for a detailed, alphabetic list.

Bulk Purchase Offer

BULK PURCHASE OFFER!!

Are you interested in a furnace based humidifier?  A water-softener?  My application for these improvements has just been granted, and the provider has offered a lower price if more than 5 units are installed at the same time.  I am currently looking for interested members/units who would like to improve their home experience with these one or both these items.  Please contact Sarah 403 918 3421 or message me on Facebook if you're interested (this does not commit you to install).

Do you suffer from dry, cracked skin, bleeding noses, static electric shocks when you touch a light switch?  These are all symptoms of air that is too dry and can easily be remedied with a furnace-based humidifier.

*** Costs will be borne by individual members, but you can use your unit fund to off-set the cost.

*** An application for built-in dishwasher was granted in 2015... apply for yours now!

Do you know where your main water shut off is? Every unit has one and it is important for you, other residents and house sitters to know where it is. Almost without exception you will find something like this inside the utility area of the basement. It will be close to the breaker panel, and washer/dryer hook ups. If you can’t find it, it may be behind some boxes or appliances. Make sure the water shut off is accessible in an emergency and that members of your household know where it is.

How to clean hair from your bathtub drain. This is handy to know about if your bathtub drain is a little slow. This is one quick fix that anybody can do and it saves the co-op the cost of having a plumber come to do this.

1) Gather your supplies, Lots of paper towel, a slot screw driver and needle nose pliers. Do not use tweezers for this job because if you drop them into the drain you’ll have to call the plumber.

2) Turn the knob counter clockwise until it comes off.

3) Use a slot screwdriver and turn counter clockwise to remove the stopper.
4) Your project should now look like this.

5) Use the pliers to grab the clog and repeat as often as needed to clear the drain.

6) Dispose of the fruits of your labour and repeat steps 2 and 3 in reverse order to re-assemble the bathtub stopper.
