Call for Communications Committee Members

Submitted by Mia Rushton on behalf of Communications Committee

The Communications Committee needs 2-3 new members to undertake ongoing committee tasks, with an emphasis on website and newsletter updates.

Both current members of the website team are stepping down from the committee as of December 17. It's time for a refresh and to hand the reins over to new members.

Email sunnyhill.communications@gmail.com by December 10th to join. An orientation session, including documentation of committee procedures will be provided via Zoom mid-December (date & time to be confirmed).

New Documents Available Online

Following on from a recent member’s submission and another member’s suggestion, we have added Sunnyhill’s Articles of Incorporation and our Shareholder’s Agreement to the website. This information can be accessed on the Documents page of the website under the heading Important Documents.

How to Post Comments on the Sunnyhill Voice

Submitted by Mia Rushton on behalf of Communications Committee

Now that we’re using the comments functionality on the website, we wanted to give a quick tutorial on how to use this feature.

Click the speech bubble button at the end of a post to open the comments box.

After you click the Post Comment button, you’ll be prompted to add your name. There is also the option to add an email address and or website, but these are not required.

Choose Comment as Guest to finalize the post.

Unfortunately the member login service we use doesn’t integrate with Squarespace comments. The second option to ‘Log in to Comment’ refers to Squarespace account logins- feel free to log in this way if you happen to have an account but it’s not necessary.

Voila! You’ve just posted a comment.

To respond to an existing comment, click the arrow icon on the right of the post.

This may not be the perfect solution, but we’ll try it for now and see how it works.

Please send your feedback to sunnyhill.communications@gmail.com

A Note Regarding Facebook

Submitted by Mia Rushton on behalf of Communications Committee

The Sunnyhill Facebook group is a social resource- a place for informal conversations between neighbours. Especially at this time when our lives have been changed so dramatically, many of us may be experiencing stress, anxiety and uncertainty. Having strong community connections helps- but only if we treat each other well.

We can all do our part in making this a respectful, productive and enjoyable place to connect by practicing the 3 Re’s: re-thinking our reactions, re-reading our responses and re-directing our questions.

The Sunnyhill Facebook group is not a place to discuss or debate the workings of the co-op. Please direct any questions, concerns or comments to committees or the board. The phone list includes contact information for committee members if you’re unsure of who to speak to. All posts related to co-op policy will be removed by the group admins.

Members of the Communications Committee do their best to moderate and administer this group. If you have questions or comments for the admins, please contact us via the committee email address, not Facebook tags or direct message.

Although it may feel like the conversations here are public and available to the membership- they’re not. Not everyone chooses to be on the Facebook group; it is a subset of the co-op membership. We want to encourage all members to be informed and engaged in respectful, civil and lively discussion. This is best done in a place where we can all contribute and benefit from each other’s contributions.

The Communications Committee is researching the possibility of integrating a forum on the co-op website. For now, we’ll experiment with turning commenting on blog posts at the request of the writer/ submitter. Let us know what you think! Please share your thoughts with Communications about what your ideal discussion space would look like. Reach us at sunnyhill.communications@gmail.com

Treaty 7 Land Acknowledgement

Submitted by Mia Rushton

As Sunnyhill looks to the future it makes sense that we also acknowlege the past. The Communications Committee has decided to include on our public website an acknowledgement of the history of the land that we live on.

The text of our acknowledgement is borrowed from the University of Calgary's extended acknowledgement. A short video featuring Elder Reg Crowshoe and a pronunciation guide can be found on the U of C's Territorial Acknowledgements Resources page.

Saturday morning conversation with Communitas about the new National Housing Strategy and options for us - Saturday December 9th

Submitted by Phil Cox

We have hired Communitas to help us respond to the new National Housing Strategy announced in the last ten days.

The first activity in this new engagement is a planning discussion with Sunnyhill's Planning and Development Committee. Brian Scott will be present at the meeting and Lynn Hanley will pipe in from Edmonton. All members are welcome to attend as Brian and Lynn will pass along what they know about the new strategy and its implications for us.

Website and Communications Update

Submitted by Eric Moschopedis

In April we launched the new Sunnyhill website and the Member's Only Section that includes the Sunnyhill Voice, Important Documents, and a Calendar of events.

We are happy to report that we now have 80% of the units signed up to access the website. That is 53 units out of 66! Last month alone we had nearly a hundred visits just to the Member's Only Section of the website and over 200 to the website in general. It is proving to be a valuable tool for our membership. Good work everybody!

We can also report that we have worked hard with Andrea to audit the way in which we deliver information within the Co-op. After looking over past motions and analyzing different distribution lists, we have pared down paper delivery to only seven units. The rest of the units receive their information via email only and a combination of email and the website. This is something that the membership has been working towards since 2013. It has finally happened!

One last thing: Mail Chimp is dead. The Communications Committee no longer uses this platform. Instead, Andrea notifies the membership when updates have been made to the Sunnyhill Voice via email. Thanks Andrea.
